Design and craftsmanship

What makes Wendt & Kühn figurines so special?

What makes Wendt & Kühn figurines so special?

The Wendt & Kühn manufactory has stood for the very best in fine German craftsmanship since 1915. The company’s founder, Grete Wendt (1887–1979), and designer Olly Wendt (neé Sommer, 1896–1991) –both graduates of the Königlich-Sächsische Kunstgewerbeschule [Royal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts] in Dresden – crafted a collection of unique wooden figurines and music boxes. Unlike many conventional creations in the wood-crafting tradition of the Ore Mountains, the designs are neither wooden nor stiff; nor are they overly playful. The majority of the most well-known pieces were thought up in the 1920s – a period characterized by demand for unpretentious, almost functional design that experienced its apogee in the Bauhaus tradition. These simple design guidelines also formed the basic principle for the multitude of designs whose simplicity gives them their timeless beauty even today. The mastery and artisanal skill that go into making these figurines have been preserved over the decades.

Grete and Olly Wendt’s distinctive designs, patterns, and drawings remain the authentic source of today’s collection. Products manufactured by the third-generation, family-owned manufactory are popular for their vibrant colors and signature design. They embody the perfect blend of creativity, artistic ambition, and craftsmanship, down to the last detail. Merry, playful, and brimming with childlike exuberance, the little figurines combine to form poetic tableaux that, now as then, radiate harmony and capture the hearts of people all over the world.

Why are the wings of the Eleven Dot Angels green?

Why are the wings of the Eleven Dot Angels green?

Just why Grete Wendt chose this particular color for the angels’ wings when she designed the Eleven Dot Angels in 1923 is lost in time. Green is commonly seen as the color of hope – it’s possible she consciously wanted to send a signal at a time when Germany was experiencing significant uncertainty and hyperinflation. Green also symbolizes harmony and nature. Both played an important role in Grete Wendt’s life, and doubtless also informed the design of the legendary Eleven Dot Angels.

The shade of green used for the wings gives the impression of softness and warmth, giving the angels their striking look without heavy use of color. In the past, the paint was mixed in the factory – most likely by each individual painter – which occasionally led to slight variations in tone. Today, the green used for the angels’ wings is one of the few colors delivered ready mixed.

Care and repairs

How should I look after my Wendt & Kühn figurines so they stay looking their best?

How should I look after my Wendt & Kühn figurines so they stay looking their best?

On account of their painted exterior and handcrafted nature, Wendt & Kühn’s wooden figurines are particularly sensitive to atmospheric conditions. The products are especially at risk of damage if they come into contact with rain, fog, ice, or snow crystals, for example, when displayed on market stalls. This is also the case if the relative humidity of the environment in which they are stored or displayed exceeds 60 percent. Damage is often not immediately visible but only becomes apparent a little while later. Once the wood dries out further, the paint may then crack or chip.

Your figurines will be happiest when displayed as follows:

  • at room temperature
  • out of direct sunlight
  • somewhere dry.

If you prefer to keep your figurines safely packed away, we recommend our Slumber Vaults. The figurines nestle safely within the velvet-lined compartments, waiting for their next grand entrance in the orchestra.

What can I do if a figurine gets damaged?

What can I do if a figurine gets damaged?

Do not attempt to repair the damage yourself – every visible repair or imperfectly mended area will reduce the value of your figurine. Repairs must only be carried out by an expert, especially when it comes to the time-consuming restoration work needed on older pieces. You have a range of options open to you:

Which special exhibition is currently on show at Wendt & Kühn World?

The current special exhibition at Wendt & Kühn World in Grünhainichen is called “Federleicht und himmlisch schön – die Margeritenengel von Wendt & Kühn” [“Light as a feather and heavenly beautiful – Wendt & Kühn’s Marguerite Angel”]. It is due to run until October 2026. Visitors are taken on a journey back in time to 1925 when designer Olly Sommer, later Wendt, designed the first of these heavenly messengers. The delicate Marguerite Angels with their marguerite wreaths are presented in an unprecedented abundance of historical patterns – including a private design on show to the public for the first time. The exhibition delves into the character of the Marguerite Angels through figurines, music boxes, old drawings, photographs, and documents from the company’s archive, and explores what makes them so unique. The exhibition at Wendt & Kühn World in Grünhainichen is open to visitors daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Entry is free of charge.

How many angels can be placed on the various Angel Mountains?

How many angels can be placed on the various Angel Mountains?

There is no single correct answer to this question: The maximum number depends primarily on how many angels you wish to display on the mountain. It also depends on whether you want to include an organ or a Madonna next to them. The following is a helpful guide:

  • small 3-tier Angel Mountain: 12–15 musicians
  • large 3-tier Angel Mountain: 20–25 musicians
  • 4-tier Angel Mountain: 30–35 musicians
  • 5-tier Angel Mountain without candle holders: 50–55 musicians
  • 6-tier Angel Mountain without candle holders: 70–80 musicians

Where do the musical movements in Wendt & Kühn’s music boxes come from?

Where do the musical movements in Wendt & Kühn’s music boxes come from?

We only use original Swiss musical movements in our top-quality music boxes. These traditional movements have been manufactured in Switzerland for centuries.

Can you add a musical movement retrospectively to an organ that doesn’t have one, making it play music?

Can you add a musical movement retrospectively to an organ that doesn’t have one, making it play music?

To fix a musical movement to the baseplate of the organ, the back section would need to be removed. Since the back section of an organ with no musical mechanism is firmly glued in place, unlike an organ with a musical mechanism, and therefore cannot be removed, it is not possible to insert a musical movement retrospectively.

What do the different base marks mean?

What do the different base marks mean?

The Wendt & Kühn base mark was originally designed by Prof. Margarete Junge (1874–1966) and has remained the company’s trademark symbol ever since. The elements framed by a circle represent a spruce tree, a mountain peak, and the initials “W.u.K.”

In the early days of the manufactory, a rubber stamp depicting a weather-beaten spruce and initials was used to mark the wooden base of the figurines. This was later replaced by paper labels. Over the years, historical and design processes have led to a few modifications to the base marks. They have since become important identification features, allowing us to determine the respective production periods of the figurines based on the visual differences.
